The Department of Water Engineering started its activity in 1994 with 22 BSc students in Irrigation Engineering when it was a part of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. The Department of Water Engineering started the graduate program in 2007. Today, 10 academic staff are working in the department. The department owns equipped laboratories to study fluid mechanics and hydraulics, hydrology and water resources, soil mechanics, irrigation and drainage, and meteorology. Water engineering is the application of fluid mechanics principles and other science and engineering disciplines to problems dealing with the collection, storage, control, transport, regulation, measurement, operation, and use of water. An exciting belief for water engineering is from Liggett (2002), who defines this term as clearly as a field for those who love nature and who are comfortable in applying the laws of fluid mechanics for the betterment of humanity while preserving nature. An ever-increasing population and continuous need for more water stimulate the fast-growing industry of water science and water resources management. Familiar applications of water engineering are water supply and distribution systems, flood protection, flood hazard mapping, river bed and bank erosion protection, water resources management, transport modeling of pollution in groundwater and surface water, the design and installation of drainage systems, sprinkler, and drip irrigation design, and water quality modeling. This broad field covers many aspects ranging from closed conduit pipes and sewers to open channels, rivers, canals, lakes, ponds, and dam reservoirs. Water Engineers must create new equipment and systems to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of water structures and water resource management. A water engineer should consider budgetary constraints, government regulations, and other factors when designing these systems. Water Engineering major tries to raise a new generation of engineers who have the ability and capability to develop, allocate, and manage water section’s problems at national, regional, and international levels according to risks and current uncertainties in climate change conditions.
