Soil Science

The  Department  of  Soil  Science  began  its  activities  in  1994  by  offering  the  BSc  Degree  in  Soil  Science.  At  the  moment,  the  department  offers  BSc,  MSc,  and  PhD  programs.  The  bachelor  of  soil  science  covers  various  courses,  including  soil  chemistry,  soil  fertility,  plant  nutrition,  soil  biology,  soil  physics,  soil  genesis  and  classification,  soil  erosion,  land  evaluation,  soil  survey,  and  so  forth.  The  department  started  to  offer  graduate  programs  in  1998.  There  are  four  well-equipped  laboratories,  including  soil  chemistry,  fertility  and  plant  nutrition,  soil  physics,  soil  biology  and  biotechnology,  and  soil  micro-morphology  and  clay  mineralogy.  XRD  and  Atomic  absorption  spectroscopy  are  among  the  equipment.  Teaching  and  research  activities  in  the  department  cluster  around  various  areas  of  soil  science.  Eight  academic  staffs  are  currently  active  in  the  department.  There  are  also  78  BSc,56  MSc,  and  27  PhD  students  studying  in  the  department.  The  Department  of  Soil  Science  established  the  Soil  Museum  in  2016  with  30  soil  monoliths  from  all  around  the  country.  Hosting  the  National  Soil  Congress  in  2009,  International  Symposium  on  Loess,  Soils,  and  Climate  Change  in  2014,  and  Loess  Fest  2017  are  among  the  main  meetings  organized  by  the  department.  There  are  two  academic  journals,  namely,  Soil  and  Water  Research  and  Soil  Management  and  Sustainable  Production,  publishing  the  recent  findings  related  to  soil  and  water  with  English  extended  abstracts.  The  international  journal  of  Soils  in  Space  and  Time  has  just  been  launched  to  receive  manuscripts  from  worldwide.  The  Department  of  Soil  Science  is  also  active  in  international  collaborations  based  on  the  signed  memorandums  of  understanding  with  German  and  Chinese  universities.  Research  in  loess  soils  is  the  main  target  of  these  cooperations.  The  PhD  student  exchange,  as  well  as  joint  publications  and  projects,  are  the  other  main  activities  of  the  department.
