Plant Breeding and Biotechnology
Department of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology was established by separating from Agronomy Department in 2007 and has seven faculties in different specialties including Plant Breeding, Genetic Biometry, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Plant Breeding, Cell and Tissue Culture, Genetic Engineering and Plant Gene Transformation. There are seven laboratories in this department and students not only from the Gorgan University but also from other universities can perform their research, thesis and dissertation there. There is much equipment including Gel scan, Different PCR machines, Real Time-PCR, Horizontal and Vertical Gel Electrophoresis, Incubators, Laminar Flow, Autoclave, Deep freezer, and Germinators in this department in which conducting most of Plant Genetics and Breeding projects are possible.
Furthermore, from 2011, a diverse wheat collection mainly from surrounding countries of Iran and also from all around the world was collected in the Gene Bank entitled as "Jahan Nama Gene Bank." During the last ten years of collection, preservation and evaluation of the accessions, new accessions are also added. Currently the number of these genetic resources exceeded more than 3500 accessions and they are applying for Wheat Breeding projects in order to develop new cultivars.
